AFRICA: COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTIVITY OF YAM IN AFRICA

Date : 26 June 2013

Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), together with several Japanese research institutions, has initiated a collaborative research project to promote yam germplasm utilization and genetic improvement for West Africa with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). The project aims to (1) develop and utilize genomic information and molecular techniques to facilitate genetic improvement; (2) improve analysis of the crop biodiversity and identify potentially useful germplasm for yam breeding; and (3) develop efficient protocols to evaluate important agronomic traits for yam breeding.

The outputs of this collaborative research are expected to contribute to the harnessing of yam breeding technologies and the utilization of useful germplasm. Consequently, the development of new yam varieties with increased productivity will provide better food security for the people of West Africa.
